Things to do in Tasmania – Fundraiser Walks

Our Tarkine fundraiser walks are one of the most unique things to do in Tasmania as well as being a simple and fun way to raise funds for:

  • charities
  • Not for profit organisations
  • large bushwalking clubs
  • conservation groups
  • Rotary clubs etc

Basically any organisation that fits with our values and is large enough to promote the walks with confidence that they will get the minimum numbers required.

The Aim
To form mutually beneficial relationships with organisations/groups that share our values and passion for wild places.

How does it work?

In effect we are re-directing money that would otherwise be spent on our advertising to an organisation or group that take it upon themselves to market our trips. They simply do all that they can, via their advertising/promotional outlets to have the required minimum number of people on a walk and we send them a cheque based on a commission price, see table below, once the trip has run.

Australian Geographic Society fundraiser walks

In April of 07, Australian Geographic marketed our Tarkine Explorer walk to their membership. The walk was marketed as an Australian Geographic expedition in collaboration with Tarkine Trails and accompanied by an Australian Geographic staff member. The Tarkine Explorer was a sell out success and due to large demand, we ran a second trip which also sold out.

Commission
20% of the revenue we took from the trip was donated to the Australian Geographic society, post the event. They paid for the advertising expense, we did everything else. This year the trip is running again http://editorial.australiangeographic.com.au/news_events/geoNews.aspx so catch it if you can!

Below is specific information regarding our two models of fundraiser walks, the Aus Geo walks are run under the organisational fundraiser model.

Model 1. Organisational fundraiser

The organisation goes about advertising our trips as a fundraiser to their membership/staff, we donate 20% of the trips revenue to them post the trip.

Trip name
Description
Duration
7/08 price per person
20% at six people
20% at ten people
Tarkine Explorer A vehicle supported circumnavigation of the Tarkine. Six days $1849.00 $2218.00 $3698.00
Wild Tarkine coast Tasmania's original west coast walk Six days $1649.00 $1978.00 $3298.00
Tarkine rainforest track
The only multi-day walk into the Tarkine forest
Six days $1399.00 $1678.00 $2790.00

What the organisation does.

  • Once trips and departure dates are organised, they simply advertise as broadly as possible, the more publicity, the more people on the trip, the more money raised.
  • The organisation does the walk(s)

What we do
  • We contact the organisation to discuss which walk will (s) suit them,
  • We discuss the walk departure date(s) and once agreed on we lock that date away in our walk calendar,
  • We provide advertising material, i.e photos, text etc to the organisation,\
  • Once advertised by the organisation we deal with all bookings and administration,
  • We run the trip,
  • We send the organisation the agreed commission rate.

Conditions
  • We require a minimum number of six people to participate on the trip for this to commission to be payable.
  • Prior to accepting an organisation, we will determine whether the values of the organisation meet our criteria.
  • The commission rate may vary, depending on the capacity of the organisation to market our walks. This will be discussed prior to commencement of a collaborative partnership.
  • Once agreed on we will keep our promise regarding the commission rate.
  • Fundraiser walks are not held exclusively for an organisation unless requested. We do all that we can to divert people to our normal walk departures but if the organisation is not filling the walk, we reserve the right to load our customers onto that trip. Exclusive walks are an option for the organisation, please contact us to discuss this.

Model 2. Group fund raiser

Group fund raisers are intended for

  • groups of friends
  • family groups
  • small walking groups etc...

The aim
To inspire people to talk about and advertise our walks. To generate this word of mouth advertising so that we can redirect money that would previously be spent on advertising toward groups and charities that inspire us. Examples include.

  • charities
  • Not for profit organisations
  • large bushwalking clubs
  • conservation groups

The difference between group and organisational fund raiser walks is that a group doesn't advertise the trip in the broad way that an organisation does. The added exposure we get from organisations advertising us enables us to offer organisations a 20% commission rate if they get six people onto a trip. In comparisson, a group needs to get ten people to get the 20% commisision rate and six people to get the 10% commission rate, see table below.

Trip name
Description
Duration
7/08 price per person
10% at six people
20% at ten people
Tarkine Explorer A vehicle supported circumnavigation of the Tarkine. Six days $1849.00 $1109.00 $3698.00

Tarkine rainforest track
The only multi-day walk into the Tarkine forest
Six days $1399.00 $839.00 $2790.00

What the group does.

  • Once trips and departure dates are organised, they simply promote the trip to their group. The more people on the trip, the more money raised.
  • The group does the walk(s)

What we do
  • We talk with the group to discuss which walk(s) will suit them,
  • We discuss the walk departure date(s) and once agreed, we lock that date away in our walk calendar,
  • We run the trip,
  • We send the group the agreed commission rate.

Conditions
  • We require a minimum number of six people to participate on the trip for this to commission to be payable.
  • Prior to accepting a group, we will determine whether the values of the group meet our criteria.
  • The commission rate may vary, depending on the capacity of the group to market our walks. This will be discussed prior to commencement of a collaborative partnership.
  • Once agreed on we will keep our promise regarding the commission rate.
  • Fundraiser walks are not held exclusively for the group unless requested. We do all that we can to divert people to our normal walk departures but if the group is not filling the walk, we reserve the right to load our customers onto that trip. Exclusive walks are an option for the group, please contact us to discuss this.
